A real medicine. A personal care decision.

Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) copies a hormone from the gut; this body signal helps manage blood sugar and hunger.

Under U.S. rules checked September 26, 2026, these medicines could only be given out on a prescription from a licensed prescriber.

A health professional allowed to order medicine is known as a prescriber.

Choose a route, then ask a direct question.

You do not need to sort out every option at once. Start with the route that fits where you are.

Ask for a referral.

If you already see a doctor or another health professional, ask who offers weight or diabetes care. A referral means being sent to another health professional. Ask how to arrange that visit.

Ask: Can we talk about whether this care fits my goal?

Look up the licence.

Doctors receive licences from state medical boards, which also keep public records of formal charges and punishment for rule breaking.

Use the doctor’s full name when you search.

Find your state medical board

Ask how the care works.

For an in-person clinic or telehealth, meaning care through video calls, phone calls or online forms, ask who will check your health. Ask which pharmacy will give you the prescribed medicine.

Ask: Is the visit live or done through a form, and who answers questions afterward?

The state where you sit matters.

As of September 26, 2026, the person giving online care needed a licence or permission from the state in which you were sitting.

Ask for the licence number or state record showing permission for your visit. Check it with that state’s board, especially if you will be travelling.

Read the record. Then ask about the care.

A clean board record means no action against the doctor, such as a formal charge or punishment, is publicly recorded.

A clean record gives no rating for the care a doctor provides.

Ask who reads your health history, how questions between visits are handled, and what you pay if no medicine is prescribed.
